Paediatric surgeons are specialists who diagnose, treat, and provide surgical care for a wide range of conditions in infants, children, and adolescents. Some common conditions that I treat include:
-
Hernias: Hernias in children can occur in the groin (inguinal hernia) or around the belly button (umbilical hernia). These hernias are treated through surgery.
-
Appendicitis: Inflamed or infected appendix often requires surgical removal (appendectomy) to prevent complications.
-
Congenital Anomalies: These are conditions present at birth and may include conditions like intestinal atresia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, gastroschisis, omphalocoele, oesphageal atresia with or with out a fistula, congenital lung malformations, anorectal malformations
-
Gastrointestinal Conditions: Conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), pyloric stenosis, and intestinal obstructions.
-
Tumors: Removal of benign or malignant tumors in various parts of the body, including neuroblastomas, Wilms tumors, and liver tumors.
-
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): Conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis can sometimes require surgery, such as bowel resections.
-
Anorectal Malformations: Conditions like imperforate anus, which require surgical correction.
-
Other colorectal conditions: Hirschsprung's Disease and Constipation
-
Urological Conditions: Conditions like undescended testicles, and vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), PUJ obstruction, posterior urethral valves. Neonatal and older children Circumcision for religious or medical reasons.
-
Chest and Lung Conditions: Surgeries for congenital lung malformations, tracheoesophageal fistula, and lung tumors.
-
Trauma: Paediatric surgeons may be involved in treating injuries and abdominal trauma.
-
Skin Lesions and Tumors: Removal of skin lesions or tumors, including birthmarks and moles.
-
Biliary Tract Conditions: Gallbladder or biliary tract problems in children may require surgical intervention.
-
Vascular Anomalies: Surgical treatment of vascular birthmarks and other vascular anomalies.
-
Minimally Invasive Surgery: I can also perform minimally invasive procedures (laparoscopy) for various conditions, reducing surgical invasiveness.
-
These are just a few examples of the many conditions that I diagnose and treat. Paediatric surgery involves specialized training and expertise in providing surgical care to young patients, taking into account their unique needs and developmental considerations.
