Umbilcal Hernia in Children

What is an Umbilical Hernia?

An umbilical hernia is a soft swelling or bulge at your child’s belly button.

  • It happens when the small opening in the tummy wall (where the umbilical cord passed through at birth) does not close completely.

  • The bulge is usually more obvious when your child cries, coughs, or strains.

  • Umbilical hernias are very common, usually painless, and often close on their own.

Will it Close on its Own?

  • Most umbilical hernias close naturally by the age of 2–3 years.

  • Some may take a little longer, but by 5 years of age most will have disappeared.

When Should I Worry? 🚨

Seek urgent medical attention if:

  • The swelling becomes hard, red, or painful.

  • The bulge cannot be pushed back in.

  • Your child is vomiting or very unwell.

These are signs that a piece of intestine may be trapped (rare).

Does My Child Need Surgery?

Most children do not need surgery.
Surgery may be recommended if:

  • The hernia is large.

  • It does not close by about 4 years of age.

  • It causes problems (rare).

What Does Surgery Involve?

  • Your child will have a short general anaesthetic (fully asleep).

  • A small cut is made inside the belly button fold.

  • The opening is stitched closed with dissolvable stitches.

  • The scar is hidden in the belly button.

  • Most children go home the same day.

Recovery 🌈

  • Mild soreness for 1–2 days is normal.

  • The belly button may look swollen at first but settles within a few weeks.

  • Children usually return to normal play and school within a few days.
